School of Architecture, Soochow University
Founded in 2005 in the ancient city of Suzhou, the School of Architecture at Soochow University has now journeyed through two decades. We have consistently driven innovation in design education with passion and imagination, treating curriculum development as an ongoing process of urban renewal. By integrating cutting-edge concepts such as "narrative design" and "critical thinking," we adopt a research-driven approach to practice, ensuring that design transcends spatial creation to become a medium for storytelling and inspiring change. The school has established a comprehensive disciplinary system covering architecture, urban and rural planning, landscape architecture, and historic building conservation engineering, emphasizing interdisciplinary integration to address the complex challenges of cities and the environment. We are committed to drawing wisdom from cultural heritage with a progressive spirit, cultivating creative industry leaders for the future. To achieve this, we focus on three core pillars: Faculty Excellence: Building a teaching team capable of research, collaboration, and effective teaching, driving academic leadership, cross-boundary cooperation, and classroom transformation. Student Engagement: Developing innovation and leadership skills through dynamic, challenging, and grounded courses focused on real-world issues such as urban renewal and ecological conservation. Cultural Integration: Bridging tradition and the future by respecting cultural roots such as Suzhou gardens and Jiangnan architecture, while incorporating new technologies like AI design and sustainable materials to explore the fusion of "old traditions and new technologies." With an evolving mindset, we inspire faculty and students to jointly shape the future of architectural and design education. Exhibition: Rooted in Heritage, Oriented to the Future This exhibition showcases the 20-year development of the School of Architecture at Soochow University and reflects its educational mission: honoring its foundational roots while boldly embracing the future. The curriculum is guided by two threads: the elevation from technique to concept, and the leap from accumulation to innovation. Course content is rooted in local practices while expanding global perspectives, helping students cultivate future-oriented design capabilities. Welcome to the School of Architecture’s exhibition at FutureLab. This exhibition demonstrates our unwavering commitment to nurturing design talents for the future—individuals who are not only skilled designers but also thinkers, innovators, and storytellers. Here, you will witness the creative sparks ignited between faculty and students as we tackle real-world problems through design and explore the future through research. Drawing wisdom from traditional culture while innovating for the future—this is what our courses aim to impart to students: the ability not only to adapt to a changing world but also to proactively lead innovation. These projects exemplify the foresight and innovation embedded in our curriculum. As the teaching system continues to evolve, students are progressively mastering the skills to address complex issues. The 21st century is an era of technology and innovation, and we aspire for our students to be equipped to face its challenges and opportunities. Each work on display responds to real-world themes: whether through experimental innovations in digital technology or green, sustainable design practices, they collectively shape the future of architecture. Over the past two decades, the school has continuously expanded the breadth and depth of its disciplines, with architecture, urban and rural planning, landscape architecture, and historic building conservation engineering serving as its four pillars. Each discipline contributes a unique professional perspective, together forming a diverse and integrated educational system. The works exhibited here vividly reflect the power of interdisciplinary collaboration—they are not only innovative sparks ignited by the convergence of different fields but also a testament to how collaboration unlocks design potential. In the dialogue between tradition and innovation, faculty and students delve deep into heritage while constantly exploring new frontiers, actively responding to global challenges facing the discipline, such as climate resilience, urban livability, and technological transformation. This demonstrates the inclusive and dynamic force of architectural education as it looks toward the future. Let us celebrate these visionary designs and honor the thought and creativity behind them. May they ignite inspiration and guide us toward a more innovative and brilliant tomorrow.
