Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts

Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts was founded in April 2005, originally known as Fudan University Shanghai Visual Art College. In 2008, the institute was approved by the Ministry of Education to conduct early independent enrollment, becoming one of the first private higher education institutions in China to receive such eligibility. In 2015, the institute’s "Art and Design" discipline was ranked 51–100 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, and it has been included in the rankings five times over its 20-year history, demonstrating its academic strength and international influence. From a blueprint on paper to the vibrant art campus it is today, the institute has forged a distinctive development path characterized by integrity and innovation. The College of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage Conservation aims to build a “grand fine arts” discipline with immense development potential. Guided by the core philosophy of “Heritage · Innovation · Integration,” it adopts a dual-driven development model that combines traditional foundations with digital empowerment. In terms of disciplinary structure, the college preserves the roots of culture and art through classical majors while driving innovation in its eight majors with new concepts and methods. It cultivates versatile artistic talents equipped with both traditional knowledge and innovative capabilities. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the institute. On this occasion, the College of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage Conservation, in collaboration with the Digital Media Art major, presents the exhibition “Code of Festivals” at the FutureLab Art and Design Fair, showcasing the college’s latest explorations in interdisciplinary integrated teaching. The college comprises eight majors, and under the innovative concept of “cross-college, cross-major, cross-course” advocated by Dean Shi Mo, several majors have achieved fruitful results through collaborative courses. The Digital Media Art major, established in 2008 as one of China’s early pioneers in new media art, continues to explore the boundaries of art and technology integration. “Code of Festivals” focuses on the temporal and spatial connotations of “festivals” in Chinese civilization—as spiritual coordinates where humanity and nature, tradition and modernity intersect. The ancient people followed natural rhythms, perceived time through bodily senses, and marked pauses and celebrations with rituals, forming deeply ingrained cultural memories. The exhibition features works selected from the outcomes of the “Innovative Joint Course Group” of the Digital Media Art major, using digital language to reinterpret festival culture and demonstrate the contemporary fusion of teaching innovation and artistic expression. Today, digital media, with data and algorithms as its language, is rewriting these festival experiences. Ancient solar terms have become smartphone notifications, and rituals have transformed into likes and shares. We are compelled to ask: When the flame and the physical presence are absent, how can the spirit of festivals endure? When festivals are “coded” into images, sounds, and virtual spaces, how do we engage in dialogue with tradition? The exhibition “Code of Festivals” responds to these questions through teaching practices. It invites viewers to feel the warmth behind the code and observe the pulse of culture within digital syntax. Festivals are transforming, media is finding its voice, and this imaginative journey into the future of tradition continues.
